Strong start to the fall after a busy summer: 1.3 million passengers, record cargo volume in September

27 October 2023

Following the busy summer months, September was also a busy month at Liszt Ferenc International Airport, with 1 million 366 thousand passengers using the airport, 15.2 percent more than in the same period last year, Budapest Airport Zrt. said in a press release on Friday.

After an outstanding summer, September was also a busy month at Ferenc Liszt International Airport, with 1,366,005 passengers, 15.2% more than in the same period last year. The total number of passengers in the summer months of 2023 was 4,270,513. Between January and September, the capital airport welcomed a total of 10,981,806 passengers, an increase of 21.2% compared to the first nine months of 2022 and only 9.4% fewer than in the record year of 2019. The volume of cargo handled at the airport in September reached 16,924 tons, surpassing the September 2022 figure by 11.6% and generating the strongest start to a season in the history of air cargo in Budapest. By comparison, this represents a 56% increase compared to the volume recorded in September before the opening of the BUD Cargo City, providing a significant boost to the Hungarian economy and the competitiveness of Hungarian companies. At the same time, the number of cargo flights has decreased by 1.8% compared to last year, due to the better utilization of dedicated cargo aircraft and the fact that some of the cargo is carried as belly cargo, on the lower deck of airliners.

Self-service baggage check-in - now with Ryanair

Yet another airline now offers self-service baggage drop-off at Ferenc Liszt International Airport; from August, all Ryanair passengers departing from Budapest can now use the self-service baggage drop-off kiosks available in Terminal 2B. Self-service kiosks numbered 61-63 are dedicated for Ryanair, while Wizz Air passengers can continue to drop off baggage at all previously installed kiosks, including the T2A side. (Wizz Air passengers can continue to use the dedicated airline kiosks number 47-49, which are located directly next to the traditional check-in desks used by Wizz Air.) Self-service baggage drop-off is available in both terminals for the passengers of several airlines, and pictograms on the LCD displays inform passengers about the participating airlines and flights, where  this option is available. These latest additions will make traveling faster and more convenient for even more people with self-service baggage drop-off now available for two-thirds of passengers.

Terminal Parking and Bus Terminal open

The new Terminal Parking and the Bus Terminal, located between Terminal 2 and the ibis Styles Budapest Airport Hotel, have been operating since August, adding 586 parking spaces for cars and 8 spaces for coaches, respectively. The new car park also houses a customer service office, with a covered walkway leading up to the airport building, providing easy access to Terminal 2A and 2B within just a 1-2 minutes walking distance. The new facility offers the most convenient option for both passengers looking for short-term parking and the coaches of travel agencies. The total value of the investment was 2.4 billion HUF (6 million EUR).

Budapest Airport adds lifestyle hotel brand to its hotel portfolio

Construction has started on a new hotel in the immediate vicinity of Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport, developed jointly by WING and Budapest Airport. The new TRIBE hotel is being built next to the ibis Styles Budapest Airport Hotel, which opened in 2018, located within walking distance from the entrance to Terminal 2. The 8000 square meter, functional design hotel with 167 rooms will offer both business and leisure travelers an outstanding guest experience, thanks to quality services and expanding conference capacities. There will also be a gym on the seventh floor, and a skybar for an outstanding gastronomic experience, with breathtaking views.

Dog park opens next to the City Break Parking

A public dog park has opened near Ferenc Liszt International Airport Terminal 2, next to the City Break Parking. In the fenced area, pets have access to a drinking fountain, and are entertained in a variety of play spaces, while their owners can enjoy the view of the aircraft taking off and landing, from the comfortable benches provided.
