Pannonhalma, Villány Wins at Hungarian Wine Grand Prix

04 January 2023

The 2019 Septimus Rajnai Rizling of Pannonhalmi Cseri Winery and the 2019 GT 50 Cuvée of Tamás Günzer Winery of Villány won the 2022 Hungarian Wine Grand Prix, awarded by the Hungarian Wine Writers' Circle (MBK), in the white wine category and the red wine category, respectively.

In 2022, MBK evaluated for the seventh time the dry and semi-dry wines produced by Hungarian producers in the last five vintages, the professional organization told the state news agency MTI.

As they recalled, the members of the MBK compiled the Super 12 lists of the best white and red wines from the wines they tasted last year, and then selected one of the twelve winners of the Hungarian Wine Grand Prix 2022 at a blind tasting.

For the first time in the history of the competition, the award goes to Pannonhalma, while Villány is the fourth winner of the award, and Tamás Günzer is the first wine producer in the history of the award to double his tally, and after last year's success, he will be the winner of the Hungarian red wine Grand Prix this year.

This time, ten Hungarian wine regions are represented in the 2022 Super 12 lists: Tokaj and Szekszárd (4-4) with the most wines, followed by Villány, Eger and Pécs (3-3). 15 of the wines are varietal wines and nine are blends.

In honor of József Kosárka, the founding President of the Hungarian Wine Writers' Circle, who died last year, the association has established a special prize, which will be awarded each year to the winery whose members nominate the most different wines for the Super 12 election, representing the widest range of wines in the competition of outstanding Hungarian wines.

The winner of the 2022 Dr. József Kosárka Memorial Award of the Hungarian Wine Writers' Circle is Thummerer Winery from Eger, which has previously been Grand Prize winner once, has been selected three times in the Super 12 and this year has five different wines nominated by its members. The awards ceremony (trophies and certificates) will take place in spring 2023 in Pécs, organized by the Pécs Wine and Gastronomy Magazine Pécs.
