There is a reason oysters have been regarded as an aphrodisiac since the middle ages – a fact now proven by American scientists. The belief originated from the legend of the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, who sprang forth from the sea on an oyster shell. It is also rumoured that Casanova used to eat oysters on daily basis for the purpose of maintaining the power of his manhood. Oyster beds grew naturally along seashores of and, thanks to their adaptability (and their ability to filter a hundred of liters of water a day), survived many climate changes through thousands of years – until the great industrialisation, when their numbers were reduced due to water pollution. Today, oyster beds are grown under strict surveillance and control.
