For the tenth time, the Indian Film Festival returns to Budapest, organized by the Embassy of India. From 27 February to 1 March, the Metropolis Hall of Puskin Cinema will host a special selection of seven free screenings with Hungarian subtitles, bringing the energy, spectacular visuals, and rich storytelling traditions of Indian cinema closer to Hungarian audiences.
The Indian film industry—one of the largest and most prolific in the world—produces hundreds of films every year, proving that spectacular entertainment and the sensitive portrayal of complex social issues can go hand in hand. The industry reaches millions of viewers worldwide.
Oscar-Winning Sensation and Inspiring True Stories
This year’s seven-film lineup offers a rich panorama of contemporary and award-winning productions, from historical epics to social dramas and inspiring real-life stories. One of the festival’s highlights is the Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning RRR, which follows the friendship of two legendary revolutionaries in a monumental and visually breathtaking tale of freedom and heroism. 12th Fail is a moving portrait of a young man who rises from poverty to pursue a career in public service—an inspiring story about perseverance and the power of dreams. The National Film Award-winning Hellaro (The Outburst) tells the story of women in the desert who find freedom through the elemental power of music and dance.
History, Justice and Family Drama – Completing the Festival Lineup
The rest of the program showcases a diverse range of genres and themes. Chhaava is a grand historical biographical epic portraying the bravery, loyalty, and sacrifice of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The Kashmir Files is a powerful drama that reveals the story of the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits with raw realism and emotional intensity. Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai is a gripping courtroom drama about a determined lawyer who stands up to power to pursue justice. Raksha Bandhan is a heartfelt family story blending humor and emotion while exploring love, sacrifice, and social traditions.
Initiated by the Embassy of India, the festival aims to strengthen cultural ties between India and Hungary through the universal language of cinema and bring audiences closer to India’s vibrant culture. As H.E. Mr. Anshuman Gaur noted, “The power of cinema allows us to tell stories without a single word, and the festival celebrates not only artistic excellence in filmmaking, but also the enduring friendship and cultural exchange between our peoples.”
The Indian Film Festival Budapest once again promises an unforgettable cinematic journey filled with spectacular visuals, powerful emotions, and universal stories—turning the screen of Puskin Cinema into a gateway to India for one weekend.
