Obituary have been in Hungary several times in their 40-year history, most recently last year as guests of Sepultura as they always present a hardcore party for their fans. On 30 July, they will return again to play an unforgettable concert in the great hall of the Dürer Kert.
Obituary was formed in 1984 as Executioner. Influenced by local Tampa bands such as Nasty Savage and Savatage, as well as early Metallica and Slayer, the Tardy brothers formed a band in their garage and took to the stage early on. Even though most of the members were still underage, they were already greeting audiences with mature performances, drum samples and smoke bombs.
The band has never let up on the live atmosphere since, and those who follow their work know that you never have to expect half-steam and restraint during an Obituray show. They've never chased accolades or social media popularity, and they've never cared about trends. They've released 11 studio albums and played countless shows, yet they've stayed true to their roots: playing the hardest humanly possible music and building a loyal fan base worldwide.
Their self-titled album Obituary, released in 2017, was released at a time when death metal was experiencing a renaissance, and as a result, new fans and old fans alike discovered the power of the band. The European tour with Slayer, for example, was proof of this.
In 2023, the band released another album, A Dying of Everything, which brings everything you'd expect from Obituary: thrash (“Barely Alive”), groove (“The Wrong Time”, “My Will to Live”) and an all-encompassing atmosphere.
The band's ties to Hungary are strong not only because of their past shows here, but the music videos produced for them by Balázs Gróf also help ensure that they arrive in Budapest with a strong show and a good taste in their mouths.
Hungarian audiences have already benefited from the atmosphere created by Obituary several times, but the songs from their latest album will get their real chance on 30 July, when the band will be hosting a headlining party in Dürer Kert. Tickets for the concert go on sale on 10 June at 11am.
