New French Michelin Guide with a surprise
As usual, the French Michelin-guide, introducing the best restaurants of France, was published early March. This time, it caused a big surprise: the restaurant of a tiny village of 133 inhabitants, located 30 kilometers from the town of Narbonne in Southern France, was given the rare three stars.

The place of interest in the southern French village of Fontjoncouse is the L’Auberge du Vieux Puits (Inn To Old Wells). Gilles Goujon opened a restaurant, bearing his name, 18 years ago. The establishment was over time enlarged with a couple of rooms built around a tiny pool so that the place would have the characteristic of an inn. The jolly, corpulent chef achieved his teenage dream step by step. He received the first star in 1997 and the second in 2001.

Although, the restaurant had stars before, the wider public did not pay much attention – the word was mostly spread by its regular customers. However, now, the French media are full this place. The owner says he does not do anything special. His gastronomy adjusts to the change of seasons, the food is light and inventive. Of course, local ingredients are used from the best suppliers of the region.

However, rural cuisine must not be interpreted as cheap, prices range between EUR 58 and 125. Dishes presented on the web site show that Goujon unites spectacular, artistic serving with abundance but does not run in the footsteps of molecular cuisine.

About the 2010 French Michelin Guide

The entire list has 558 restaurants on it – of which 25 have three stars, with 455 one-star  (including 47 new ones) and 77 two-star establishments (including 10 new ones). It publishes reviews of 424 restaurants and 60 hotels.

March 21 is the start date of the 3-month promotion called ‘Spring of the Michelin guide’.
